The most important aspect of owning an electric vehicle is easy access to a charging station. EV charging units can be installed for personal or public purposes, with different units available depending on your requirements. The three main types of EV charge points are designated as “Rapid, fast and slow” determining the speed at which your electric or hybrid car will charge. The compatibility of chargers varies depending on the manufacturer of your car, and it’s always useful to read the accompanying documentation to make sure you’re using the right charger for your car.

Installing an EV charger, yourself is not recommended. A certified electrician can assess your home or office electrical system to determine the right type of EV charging station for you. Some EV charging stations will also void their warranty if they are not installed by a certified electrician.

If you are looking to have an EV charger installed at your residence you must meet the following requirements:

  • You own the property or have permission from the property owner.
  • You have your own off-street parking spot.
  • You have access to a home wi-fi network.

If you are looking to provide a public EV charging station, regulations and requirements differ depending on what network you choose to partner with. There are more than 20 different EV charging networks in the UK with varying coverage, cost and charging options.

You may also be able to take advantage of several grant schemes aimed at reducing the cost of charging infrastructure installation for both homes and workplaces offered by the government to support the wider use of electric and hybrid vehicles.

An EV charger is essential if you want to charge your vehicle from home or encourage electronic vehicle ownership at your work premises. Having an EV charging station on commercial premises also offers a unique way to bring attention to your business for electronic car owners. Some EV charging networks even offer a kickback to property owners that allow public charging at their site.
Despite being a new technology, Barratt Electrical have a wealth of experience installing EV charging units. No matter what type of property you have, we’ll be able to help you find a solution that works. Get in touch to find out more.
